Surgical Care
Dr. George brings 14 years of skill and experience in advanced gynecologic surgery
to his practice at Cape Women's Care. He will carefully evaluate your needs and
recommend a surgical solution only after exploring pharmaceutical and lifestyle
options to resolve the problem. All surgeries are conducted at Cape Coral Hospital.
Laparoscopy
Also known as "peek-a-boo" surgery, this surgical technique uses tiny incisions
and cameras and special micro-instruments to allow surgery in the abdomen and pelvis
without the complications and recovery time of traditional surgery.
Laparoscopy is well suited for treatment of endometriosis (pelvic pain and painful
periods) and fibroids. It can also be used in some cases of hysterectomy and other
treatment of excessive uterine bleeding.
Benefits of laparoscopic surgery include short hospital stay, quick recovery from
surgery, minimal scarring, and fewer surgical complications.
Ablation
Excessive uterine bleeding is a common complaint of menopausal women. The first
step in treatment is hormones to stabilize the lining of the uterus. If this fails,
or if a client is a poor candidate for hormone use, a technique of ablation, or
thinning of the uterine lining is used. This surgery generally results in significant
decrease in monthly bleeding, but can only be used in women who have completed their
childbearing.
Hysterectomy
An option to treat excessive bleeding, endometriosis, or fibroids, hysterectomy
involves removal of the uterus and, possibly the ovaries as well. Although this
surgery is commonly performed, it is a serious surgical procedure and should be
considered only after more conservative measure have failed.
One way to minimize the recovery time and complications of hysterectomy is through
a technique called "vaginally-assisted-laparoscopic-hysterectomy" or LAVH. In this
procedure, the uterus is removed without a large incision in the abdomen, shortening
recovery time from 6-8 weeks with traditional hysterectomy to 2 weeks or less. This
technique also reduces the surgical complications and results in minimal scarring.
Pelvic Prolapse & Incontinence
Problems such as a "dropped" uterus or involuntary urine leakage (such as when you
sneeze or cough) are increasingly common and difficult for many women to admit to.
There is no reason to "suffer in silence" with these common problems of mature women.
Dr. George can provide complete in-office evaluation of your symptoms and help you
decide on a course of treatment. If pharmaceutical remedies have failed or are not
appropriate for your lifestyle, surgery may be an option to restore you to a full
and active life.
